They're drawn together at an exclusive party (Utopia's version of a Bilderberg Conference?), where Milner recognises him as someone who might be able to help her. Right from the start, the casting felt spot-on – Rose Leslie is a convincing version of the younger Milner, falling in "brain love" with Philip Carvel (The Musketeers' Tom Burke) – a character we've heard so much about, but never met, like his daughter Jessica Hyde's introduction back at the end of the first episode. It's so much more than a prequel or a flashback – somehow it feels more like an extension of the whole Utopia universe, widening the parameters of the story to show us the motivations behind the madness we already have already been witness to. It's like finding yourself ditched at a party with the one person you really don't want to spend any time with, and then realising that they're fascinating. The fact that we spend the whole of the first episode in the past, anchored only by versions of the big bad Milner, is unnerving once you realise that we're not going back to the future at any point. It's a disorientating, exhilarating experience, throwing the audience in at the deep end to refresh our senses and remind us how exciting Utopia is to watch. In a childhood filled with rabbits and raisins, there's young Petrie and Jessica, and in case you forgot it's Utopia – fingernails get the eyeball treatment. We see Milner starting out on her path to become Mr Rabbit, steeling herself to the violence she believes is necessary to save the world. A whole episode without any of the original cast, a period setting – swapping the yellows for reds, and even transmitting in a different aspect ratio … We finally meet Philip Carvel, the brilliant scientist behind the deadly Janus project, and later the author of The Utopia Experiments. Even for Utopia, which has never been afraid to push the boundaries or keep its audience guessing, this is a pretty bold way to return. However, his wife hits him over the head with his 2013 virologist award, knocking him out. Michael wants to tell the world that there’s something dangerous happening. Just as he learns all this, the FDA agrees to releasing the vaccine. It leads Michael to a website that connects to a petting zoo. While scouring the internet at the interviews with family and friends, Michael notices a sticker Dale left on the wall of the house. However, his wife is worried about him, but Michael needs to figure out who is killing children and why. Michael figures out that everyone has been scripted to say something. He needs to give Dale a reason for killing himself, which involves the story that he is so overcome with guilt that he couldn’t save his daughter and a former classmate could, that he killed himself.Įveryone at Kevin Christie’s company has the same message about Dale. After Dale shockingly kills himself, Tom Christie has to quickly put a web footprint together. Sure enough, Michael starts to figure out that he’s being taken for a ride. It looks like a show home for a new development and isn’t kitted out for visitors at all. Michael follows, and we see that this home isn’t really a home at all. Louis taken down, Dale takes “Charlotte” home. What does this mean? Michael suspects it’s all a ploy It looks like Becky has died, but she wakes up. This time she can’t breathe so Jessica cuts a hole in her neck and places a funnel into it, hoping to get to her windpipe. That is temporarily interrupted by Becky having another seizure. It turns out Michael was there, and everyone is now sure it means Michael is Mr. Wilson looks at the photo from the asylum. He’s just a puppet, but they still need to figure out who Mr. He connects the flu to Peru and then connects all that to Michael.Īfter walking in on Ian and Becky getting it on in the bedroom, the group realizes that Michael probably isn’t Mr. He sees that Jessica was with other children, and at some point, Jessica had been gassed.
